For those DIY people out there I found this to be very interesting.

It can be for the home users and the higher end business users.

There is a nice web interface to configure the system.

FILE SHARING

File sharing using many different protocols SMB/CIFS (Windows file shares), NFS (UNIX file shares) and AFP (Apple Files Shares) as well as FTP, uSCSI (Block Sharing), WebDAV and other methods of sharing data over the network are available. iSCSI also supports VMware VAAI, Microsoft ODX and Microsoft windows Server 2008 and 2012 R@ clustering.

DATA INTEGRITY and PROTECTION

For the Business users
RAID-Z it has the single parity protection like RAID5 but without the "write hole" vulnerability. There is a copy on write architecture with ZFS.

ENCRYPTION

FreeNAS has industry standard AES-XTS encryption.  A user can add an additional layer of protection by adding a passphrase just incase the system is stolen.

Let me know what your thoughts are.

Thank you
